  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

The cookies were awesome, Claire. I totally love that you improvised sans rolling-pin with an empty bottle of red wine. Those we seem to have in abundance...

I'm jealous. Though I'm not familiar with "Project Runway" I want to go to a cookie couture party! Maybe it's just that I really like cookies . . .

Glad you're feeling better. I am impressed. You are an offical contest in this year's holiday RoD bake-off. Blue Girl won last years, despite Res Publica getting all pissed he lost. We hope you'll join but warn the competition is fierce.

Amanda-- next time we're together, let's make a point of baking? It's been a while since we've done that.

AG-- I've never been involved in a bake-off before, but I'm totally game. I'm not a very coordinated person, I'm all foot and leg and walk all over myself, so I've never really played sports competitively. But that's not to say I'm not a competitive person. I think I'll get really into a blogging bake-off.
